Utterly Charming Edwardian Five Bed House with South West Facing Garden
Built in the early 1900s, this delightful Edwardian semi-detached house sits at the top end of Grove Lane on the borders of East Dulwich. Inside are five bedrooms, two receptions, a nicely converted loft and two bathrooms. This is a great family house in a super location, equidistant between Denmark Hill and East Dulwich stations. We are particularly in awe of the south-west facing garden, bundles of beautiful, original features and fantastic kitchen/dining area, flooded with natural light.
Set behind a neat front garden, the house has an attractive red-brick exterior with a romantic Juliet balcony on the first floor. As you step through the front door, your eyes fall on the beautifully preserved tessellated hallway floor. The staircase is set at a right angle to the hall and then turns back on itself so that, from the first floor, you have a wonderful view down the middle of the stairwell to the floor below. To the right of the hall is the front reception, with a square bay, four original sash windows and original oak parquet flooring. An ornate arts and crafts mantel sits over the fireplace flanked on both sides by built in bookcases and cupboards. Pass a modern shower room before reaching the second reception (overlooking the rear), which is currently used as a family room. Here is another original fireplace and more bookcases in the alcoves, along with original French windows that open onto a pretty, private and south-west facing garden. The family room adjoins the long and lovely kitchen/diner, with garden access from both rooms, creating a lovely space for all of the family.
Up the stairs to an L-shaped landing and the first room is a single bedroom, currently used as a handy office. Original French windows lead onto the Juliet balcony with decorative iron railings. Next door, the master bedroom is a huge double with the same square bay as downstairs and wardrobes either side of an elegant fireplace with art nouveau tiles and a marble mantelpiece. You pass a black and white bathroom with a built in shower before finding two further bedrooms at the back of the house. One is a small double with a sash over the garden and an original and very pretty narrow fireplace, the other a larger double, with the same fireplace, a sash window and similar view of the garden - in here is a custom-made raised bed with drawers underneath (perfect for little ones or guests). Head up fixed stairs (matching the original flights) to a large, sunny converted loft room. French windows open onto a south-west facing balcony with brilliant views over the garden and neighbouring rooftops. You can even spy Parliament and the London Eye!
Green, quiet and peaceful but brilliantly located for town! Denmark Hill and East Dulwich supply the convenient and ubiquitous transport links - both are walkable in less than 10 minutes. Camberwell offers a healthy array of social endeavours - including some top notch food! We love 'The Begging Bowl', 'Artusi', 'Silk Road', 'The Peckham Refreshment Rooms' and 'The Camberwell Arms'. Pubs abound too - 'The Hermits Cave' is perfect for a pint of black, 'The Victoria Arms' is a nice gastro pub, and the 'Grand Union' and The Stormbird are friendly and fun. Sainsburys is only a 2 minute drive, and for retail therapy, try Lordship Lane and Northcross Road where you have some of the best food and gift shops in South London and more than a handful of superb restaurants.
