The Story

For the past 12 years Andi and Roger Price have enjoyed everything about life at Lantern Lights, their magnificent, architect-designed house at Gerrards Cross. They bought the mature, leafy plot back in the early 2000's and since completing their home have relished the space, comfort and easy living it has offered them. "Quite simply, we built the house of our dreams here," says Roger. "It has everything in it we desired, from great windows, through which we can watch glorious sunsets, to a beautiful garden, which was professionally designed." The plot was just over an acre in size, he explains, and was surrounded by trees. "We felt it was on the nicest street on Gerrards Cross, which is itself a great village, and we liked the fact it was opposite an Iron Age hill fort and backed on to Bulstrode Park. It seemed ideal for us."

INTELLIGENT THINKING
Once the couple had bought the land they discussed with their architect how they wanted the house to look and what it had to include. "It was a very interesting process," Andi recalls. "He asked us to write a brief, outlining what we wanted, and before long we had ended up with a 17-page document!" They decided they wanted their luxurious new home to be a contemporary take on an Arts & Crafts house. It also had to be bright, spacious and with a number of 21st century features, such as a smart home system to control heating and windows for cooling, light sensor-driven blinds, and intelligent lighting. There are also solar panels to generate electricity and a water leak detection system. Light is certainly a major theme throughout the splendid home: "We have lantern lights in the middle of the house and so many windows that bring the light streaming in throughout the day," Roger explains.

TRANQUIL SPACE
The ground floor of the impressive house includes the exquisite drawing room, with its double-height bay window and open fireplace. There is also a family room, dining room and ground floor study, as well as the spacious kitchen breakfast room, a cloakroom and utility room. The first floor features a series of bedrooms and bathrooms, together with study areas, dressing rooms and even a gym. "The master bedroom has a sitting area in the bay window where we drink our morning coffee and read the paper. We also have a balcony, with a bistro table and chairs, where we can sit in the summer," says Roger. "This is a six-bedroom house but only three are currently furnished as bedrooms: we both have studies at the back and these are linked by a library area. This house could be ideal for an artist or a professional couple."

HEART OF HOME
It is a property that would certainly suit a family or homeowners who enjoyed entertaining. "For me the kitchen is the heart of the home," says Andi. "It is open-plan, which means you can still be part of the action while you are cooking. Having said that we do have sliding doors; (American White Oak like all the other joinery) in case we want to close it off while we are entertaining. We also have lots of storage space throughout which makes it easier to keep things tidy." It was also important to the couple to create a home where the house and garden felt connected and in this they feel they have achieved great success. "When you sit in the drawing room you feel as if you are right out in the garden. We both work from home and love being able to look out at the views which are constantly changing and where you can watch one season move into the next."

EXCELLENT LOCATION
The great appeal of Gerrards Cross is that it is surrounded by beautiful countryside and offers a village lifestyle yet is also within very easy reach of London. Trains are fast and regular and the new Crossrail will soon be arriving in the area; it is also just a few miles drive to the M25 and the M40. "Of course the schools in this area are very highly regarded and we are within easy reach of Heathrow too," Roger adds.

Setting the Scene

Lantern Lights is set in lightly wooded parkland grounds, extending to approximately an acre and with landscaped gardens.
It is set behind mature hedging and has a sweeping driveway to integral garage, which has an underground wine store with space for 1,000 bottles. At the back, the house opens on to terraces for outside dining and entertaining.
"A professional designer mapped the garden out for us and then we have been enhancing it over the years," says Andi. "I brought another designer in more recently to add some colour and she said it was the most beautiful garden she had ever seen." The grounds are indeed surrounded by mature trees, which bring privacy as well as natural colour. "In the winter it feels much more open and we can see through our woodland to Bulstrode Park at the back, where there are ponies grazing, and we enjoy the beautiful sunsets through the trees." Bulstrode Park is a lovely place to walk; there are also many places to cycle, ride horses and play golf in the area. "Stoke Park is only about five to 10 minutes' drive from here and we have also enjoyed playing bridge at the local club," Roger adds.
