The Story

Walking through the house on St Edmunds Avenue the current owner finds it hard to imagine this is the same property she bought three years ago. In the time she has been here, she has completely transformed it, extending the accommodation, rearranging the layout and bringing in bright, cutting-edge interiors throughout.
"Really there are only two original walls remaining here - everything else is brand new," she says. "I bought the house because I knew the area very well and could see the great potential it held. I enjoyed the process of renovating it and now that it is finished I absolutely love it."

AN ABUNDANCE OF LIGHT
The chalet-style property dates back to around 1928 and was a single storey home when she first bought it.
"I lived in the house as it was for three months while I waited for planning permission to go through and then I moved out when work started," she says.
The project was extensive: "I built up into the loft, where I created two bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom also has an en suite shower room."
She continues: "I then completely changed the layout and made everything inside very contemporary and added aluminium anthracite windows, and the light now comes streaming in from the front and back."

INSIDE AND OUT
The property is now entered via a light, airy hall, where a beautiful staircase in solid walnut and glass makes quite a focal point. This leads on through to the magnificent L-shaped, open-plan living space, which comprises the kitchen, as well as areas for dining and relaxation on comfortable seating, and has under-floor heating. Here bi-folding doors can be pulled right back on to a decked terrace.
"This gives the house an inside-outside feel all year round but is especially nice in the summer time when the doors are open," she adds.

STUNNING KITCHEN
The kitchen itself is quite a feature, and was designed with great care and attention.
"I had a Nicholas Anthony kitchen installed, which is finished with dark brown wood and high gloss doors, and has a composite work surface," she says.
"There is a breakfast bar and I have Siemens appliances: a five-burner gas hob, with an extractor fan; built-in fridge-freezer; dishwasher, washer-drier and wine fridge. I also have a waste disposal unit (Insinkerator) and a Quooker for instant boiling water"
Also on the ground floor are two bedrooms and a shower room. These bring great flexibility to the home, she points out.
"These two rooms do not have to be bedrooms - they can be arranged to suit the needs of the next owners. I currently have one as a playroom for my grandchildren and the other could be a study perhaps."

HIGH QUALITY
Everything has been completed to a high quality, giving the home a luxurious feel throughout.
"The bathrooms upstairs have Hansgrohe fittings and Duravit sanitary ware. There are sensors so the Lutron lights in the bathroom come on as you walk in and I have rainforest shower heads."
The whole house is future-proofed, she continues. While work was being carried out she had a Cat 5 cable network installed, with speakers fitted into the ceilings downstairs and in the master bedroom with connect to a Denon sound system.
"There is a remote-controlled Lutron lighting system, which can be set to people's preferences and in zones," she adds.

AN INCREDIBLE PLACE
The location of the property has given her as much pleasure as the house itself.
"It is lovely here," she admits. "I like being able to walk to Ruislip High Street in just 10 or 15 minutes and yet this is such a nice area: it is a private road and I back on to woods."
She can also pick up the M25 or M40 in just 15 minutes and can be in London within 20 minutes if she is driving.
"It is also very easy to catch a mainline train - you can walk to the station in 20 minutes," she adds.
Having lived in the area for more than 40 years now, she is keen to stay close by if possible when she moves.
"I am moving in order to have a lifestyle change but I have loved everything about this house," she says. "It was fun seeing it all come together and it has been an incredible place to live."

Setting the Scene

The house is set back with a large front driveway. The rear garden, which is triangular in shape, is laid to lawn.
Bi-folding doors from the kitchen and living area open on to a large terrace. Here there is space for outside dining and entertaining. At the end of the garden there is a pretty arbour, where it is nice to sit for a cup of tea in the afternoon.
