Tower Windmill, Clavering, Essex

Withdrawn from Market £600,000

Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Tower Windmill was originally constructed in 1811 and was part of a pair collectively known as The Clavering Mills. This was the north mill and there is also a south mill. They were used to mill corn from the local area and the majority of the original internal machinery is still in situ and this would need to remain as a condition of the planning permission. There were once large sails on the towers but these were removed in the early part of the twentieth century. In the 1950's, the original cap was removed and replaced with a zinc cap.

The current owners purchased the disused Windmill in 2001 and sought to bring this iconic building back to life with the main purpose of becoming a home. Initially, the main aim was to repair and protect the integrity of the building. An existing lean to was removed and replaced with high quality, single storey accommodation that wraps around the base of the tower, finished in feathered painted cladding allowing it to, as closely as possible, resemble what has been viewed locally for over 200 years.

The owners have now had a once in a lifetime opportunity which would mean selling Tower Windmill without completing the tower conversion.

Full planning permission is still in place to create stylish and individual accommodation in the Tower itself and these plans are available upon request. (UTT/0009/06/FUL).

Accommodation currently comprises a hall with natural stone flooring and double doors which open to the base of the tower. The kitchen/breakfast room enjoys stunning views and features a bespoke, handmade, solid wood kitchen with part granite and part solid wood worktops. There is a large Range style oven with (Calor) gas hob and a matching stainless steel splash back and extractor hood. There is also an integrated washing machine and dishwasher and space for a fridge/freezer.There is also a reception room which is currently used as a sitting room, a large family bathroom with wet room shower and three double bedrooms with a master to the en suite. In the tower itself, there are four floors. The largest on the ground floor is currently used as a grand dining room and there are double doors that open to the garden. In the conversion plans, this space would become a large sitting room and there is a provision for the inclusion of a log burning stove. The first floor and second floor could become further reception areas and the natural views become more impressive the higher up the tower you go.

Outside, there is a five bar gate that opens to a shingle drive which provides ample parking for a number of cars. The rest of the garden wraps around the tower and is mainly laid to lawn with hedging on the borders and open views in most directions.
