Location
The Brendon Hills are a little known but quietly beautiful landscape in West Somerset & are an elongated ridge of hills in the west of Somerset, east of Exmoor. There are a number of streams and rivers, throughout the hills, which run south to meet the River Haddeo, a tributary of the River Exe. The River Tone originates at Beverton Pond on the Brendons, and flows south into Clatworthy reservoir, through Waterrow and then to Greenham, and on to Taunton.

The Brendons are fairly heavily cultivated unlike their neighbouring Exmoor and Quantock Hills. Over the course of many centuries the Brendon Hills have been mined for Iron Ore and other minerals; and as a result a lot of interesting industrial archaeology from this period can still be found in the Hills. Perhaps most notably close to the route of what was the West Somerset Mineral Railway. The Brendon Hills merge into the eastern side of Exmoor, and are here included within the Exmoor National Park. The highest point on the hills is Lype Hill at 1,388 feet.

DIRECTIONS
The B3224 runs from Bishops Lydeard to Wheddon Cross through the Brendon Hills and onto Exmoor. From the Raleghs Cross Inn head west and after approx half a mile turn right at the chapel signposted Wheddon Cross. After approx 1 mile take the right hand turn on Sminhays Corner onto the lane leading to Treborough. Higher Sminhays can be found on the left hand side approx 300yds along this lane.
