THE STORY

Having grown up on Mersea Island, David and Penny couldn't wait to return and Springfield has proved a magical place for their own family to live too.
"They say that everybody who leaves Mersea Island comes back as it such a wonderful place to live - and I am no different. We all love to sail and we are close to the sea. And you can walk through to the creeks from the house," says David.
"We bought the house in 2001, and with four children, we needed space, which is something Springfield has in abundance. It is nestled in the centre of a huge secluded plot and is filled with sunshine and light."

FAMILY KITCHEN

Springfield is a classic 1950s' property which has been restored and extended.
"It is a beautiful old house, with Essex boarding at the top and render at the bottom and we have completely renovated it throughout."
At the heart of the house is the fabulous family kitchen.
"I think it is our favourite room: it is a great space with a 10-seat dining table and a large island where everyone gathers. It has views over the garden and the pool house and the sun pours in during the afternoon. When the kids and all their friends were round they would always be in here and the kitchen has always been full of noise and laughter," David recalls.

ALL SEASONS

The main living area is divided into two distinct spaces - a drawing room and dining room.
"There is an open fire at one end and a log-burner at the other so it is an incredibly cosy room in the winter and because it is south-facing, it is also always filled with sunshine whatever the time of year," he says.
"French windows open to the garden room, which is another of our favourite spots in the house. In the winter it is warm and sunny, and in the summer, with the doors open, it links the inside and outside wonderfully, and you can really appreciate the garden and our beautiful setting.
"The children used to use it as their room to hang out with their friends, but it could make a family play room, hobby room, work space, or as we use it now, simply a great place to relax on the sofa in the sunshine and soak up the views."

SENSE OF SPACE

Upstairs there are five bedrooms which are all bright and airy.
"Because we are in the middle of such a large plot the sun moves round the house throughout the day, so the bedrooms are all flooded with light and we have fabulous views of the island," says David.
"Four of the bedrooms are large doubles and all have excellent built-in storage, and the fifth bedroom is also a good size. Even with four children growing up in the house and all the bedrooms full, it never ever felt crowded. It has always felt like a house full of space."

SWIMMING FUN

Outside, the property is set in 1.7 acres of stunning grounds with its own heated indoor swimming pool complex built by the owners.
"Obviously the kids loved it, but my wife ran a swimming school as well so the facilities are excellent and the pool house itself is beautiful, finished in Essex boarding to complement the house. However, if you don't want to run a swimming pool, we also have planning permission to fill it in and transform it into two holiday lets - there is a huge demand for holiday accommodation on the island because it is such a beautiful spot," he adds. "The flexibility and potential of the property is one of the things we have always loved about it." The building can of course be easily converted into useable space I.e. stabling, games room etc

HAPPY TIMES

David and Penny will leave with so many happy family memories of their time at Springfield.
"The children have loved growing up here - it is a fantastic family house, especially with the pool. They didn't need to go anywhere else: there was so much space here for them to have their own adventures. Their friends would all come round, they would camp out, play pitch and putt and have parties," he says.
"We have celebrated some wonderful special occasions here and have had 300 guests before with marquees on the lawn. But best of all was the wedding of one of our children, which we had right here in the garden. It was a magical day."

SETTING THE SCENE

Set in the centre of 1.7 acres of stunning secluded grounds, just a mile from the sea and close to the coastal creeks, Springfield is perfect for those who love the fresh air. In the countryside yet not remote.
The gardens are incredibly private, with plenty of sunny spots for eating outside, lawns, trees and plants. There are also various outbuildings and plenty of space to store boats and other vehicles.
The property also has its own heated indoor swimming pool complex with large changing room and shower facilities.
