3 bedroom house for saleBroad Street, Somerton, Somerset
An historic property bursting with character
and situated in the heart of Somerton.
Grade II* Listed. Built on the foundations of a tenth/eleventh Century Saxon Conventual Priory.
Extensive Panelling dating back to 1623. Door and window mouldings and labels of local Stone quarried from Ham Hill. The walls are local blue and white Lias stone with lime mortar pointing. Old cheese and cider cellar which can hold in excess of 2000 bottles of wine. Beautiful walled garden. Strictly organic herb garden for the last
30 years. Potting shed. Pond. Mews garage with original cobbled floor and mezzanine floor above and connected to mains water supply.
Arguably one of the prettiest and oldest houses
in Somerton, first glimpses of Medwyn House are
striking with its very pretty facade constructed of
blue and white Lias stone with Hamstone labelling.
The front roof is of Cotswold stone and slate with
tiles to the remaining rooves (the thatch was removed in 1911 and replaced by slate and Roman tiles).
Justifiably Grade II* Listed of Historical and
Architectural importance, it is of little surprise that
Medwyn House is steeped in history. The property
is believed to be built on the foundations of a tenth/eleventh century Saxon Priory, it has certainly been suggested that two of Medwyn's internal walls are possibly of Saxon origin but the main body of the house dates to no later than the fourteenth century.
There are several priest holes which were constructed in the years immediately following the reformation.
