The Story

A WELCOME HOME
Upon entering the inviting house, visitors find themselves in the
open-plan living space. Here the kitchen, dining room and drawing
room come together to form one delightful area. With numerous
windows, as well as glass doors, this is filled with an abundance of
natural light.
“It truly is the hub of the house,” she says. “My favourite part is the
wood-burning stove: there’s nothing better than sitting next to it
on a winter’s evening, looking out over the fields.”
INTERIOR STYLE
A sharp modern décor and ingenious use of light helps to maintain
a wonderful sense of space and airiness at Bird Cottage.
“When we moved in we decided to give it a complete overhaul and
by the end we had put in new floors, and kitchen and bathroom
suites, as well decorating the whole place ourselves.”
It is clear how much of a concerted effort there was to ensure a
sense of spaciousness throughout the whole cottage. By
maintaining original features such as large wooden beams and
lattice windows alongside clean precise paintwork and downlights,
the property the owners have delivered a masterclass of cottage
renovation.
CHARACTER FEEL
At the rear of the house is another reception room which is part of
the original structure of Bird Cottage. The deep hue of the wooden
floor and the large open fireplace give this room an inviting
ambience. “In here we have the original front door that opens out
into the woods. I love the feeling of tradition here and nothing is
better than a Christmas Day spent around the fire with all the
family.” She continues: “It is wonderful having all our modern
comforts in a rural cottage but this is the room that gives me that
personal connection to history of property.”
BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
Upstairs there are four double bedrooms, all of which are
impeccably decorated to the owner’s high standards.
“The master bedroom is a touch smaller because of the en suite
shower room but it is my favourite room by far. There are lots of
interesting features like the eaves and wardrobes: it is really quite
quirky!”
Each bedroom offers something different whether it is extra
storage, panoramic views of the garden or a dual aspect. “The
largest bedroom has actually been used for each of our children; it
is everyone’s favourite by far and sleeping there has become
something of a rite of passage,” she laughs.
GARDEN DAYS
The garden has been a key part of life at Bird Cottage. A lush green
lawn wraps its way around from the spacious driveway in the front
to beyond the sun terrace in the back.
“It is the part of the house that everyone comments on: we have a
covered bandstand with furniture and a heater that we call The Hut:
it is perfect for lounging in and looking out across the fields,” she
says.
Despite the incredible views, privacy is maintained thanks to the
mature trees that surround the property.
“We also have another area of decking that has a little pergola on it
and some lawn furniture – and we have had all sorts of parties out
there, 18th and 50th birthday parties, as well as anniversaries, you
name it!”
