The Vendor's View - I bought the plot back in 1991 with the view to build my own property, which had been a dream of mine for over twenty years before that. After obtaining planning permission, Stable Cottage was built over the course of a year despite great adversity, but we triumphed and got the house built. We have lived here for almost 25 years now, in the prettiest part of the ‘Garden of England’.
The property was constructed using a unique heritage cottage building system. The timber frame and structure make this house very energy efficient, which results in far lower bills than houses half the size. I used a lot of handmade materials such as bricks from Yorkshire and tiles from Denge Marsh, Kent. Stable Cottage is extremely pretty with a lovely feel about it.
The lounge is probably our favourite room thanks to the large inglenook fireplace. It is a glorious place to cosy up in the winter months, and similarly wonderful to relax in the summer. The galleried landing is particularly attractive and there are some very nice rooms including the beautiful dining room. It’s a lovely, comfortable property and a joy to live in.
The house is positioned on a quiet country lane, and yet Hawkinge and Canterbury Road are easily accessible from the property. The village has a fish & chip shop, Indian and Chinese takeaways, a couple of local shops and a few pubs. There are also two doctors surgeries and a dentist. It has all you need locally to survive, and is just 3 miles from Folkestone and the railway station there. From Folkestone, it is just 52 minutes on the high speed train to London, St. Pancras.
We are certainly going to miss the space that this substantial property has provided us with. Stable Cottage has been a perfect family home for us, but we are looking to downsize now that the children are grown up with families of their own.
