Built in 1928 and designed by renowned Newcastle-based architect Marcus K Glass, the building was created in a "free Byzantine style," with a barrel ceiling painted with stars and sky.

This Grade 2 listed building has since been described as "an essay in Cinematic Art Deco," and was rated by the Pevsner architectural guide as "vigorous and decorative".

The Synagogue Temple is set over three levels and is mainly of red brick construction with decorative stone dressings and a series of distinctive and attractive stained glass windows. The roof areas are double pitched of terracotta tile covering, supported on timber Purlin's and Rafters with two brick towers to the front

Internally, the Synagogue has a lower ground floor area comprising of a large prayer hall off which are various facilities including toilets, kitchen area, offices and access to a small basement boiler room. At the main ground floor level there is a double entrance reception / lobby beyond which is the main sanctuary hall. The main hall area has a full height vaulted ceiling with balcony and gallery areas around three sides.

Externally, the property is surrounded by paved and tarmacadam areas along with a large sweeping drive to the front.
