The Story

As soon as the couple saw the house at White Waltham, and took in its glorious countryside surroundings, they realised they had found a home that was really quite special. It was eight years ago that they went to view the four bedroom, detached house and since then they have enjoyed its very individual character, as well as its spectacular setting.
“We loved the location,” one of them says. “The house is in a wonderful rural setting but at the same time it is still very easy to access the motorway for travelling to other parts of the country, as well as shops and some of the nice restaurants there are in the area. The house itself was so different from other properties. It had its own unique character and also came with just the right amount of land.”

THE OLD AND THE NEW
Littlecote is believed to date at least as far back as the 17th century and to have once been a cottage for workers on a nearby farm. Timberwork is still visible both inside and out, with exposed beams in the ceilings, and some internal studwork. Externally, the property also features brickwork and has a tiled roof.
It offered a good balance of the old and the new, the owner explains.
“Although it had some older style features, it was also modern internally, which appealed to us,” he says. “It had just the right space for us too: it is not a massive house and yet it is still generous, with rooms that are all good sizes.”

UNIQUE STYLE
The property was in good condition when the couple moved in and so since then it has simply been a question of adding a few finishing touches of their own.
“We replaced the boiler and have had new lighting put in; we have also carried out some plastering and decorative work,” he explains. “In all the work we have done we have wanted to ensure the house is suitable for modern day living (with features such as CCTV and a security system, for example) while also retaining its original character.”
He adds: “It is a very individual home, where people appreciate its unique style as soon as they step inside.”

ENTERTAINING AT HOME
Visitors enter via a porch and then the enormous drawing room. This is a very long space, with a beautiful brick fireplace housing a wood burner. At one end is a stud wall on to a space that can be a dining room, family room or study.
“This house is very good for entertaining as there is a good flow between the different spaces,” he says.
There is also a large kitchen breakfast room, giving on to the bright conservatory, and an additional reception room, with French doors on to the garden. This could be used as a dining room, snug or playroom.
“The kitchen breakfast room is a good size, with plenty of storage, and a breakfast bar offering an additional space for meals.”

COMFORTABLE LIVING
Also downstairs is a possible fourth bedroom, with an en suite cloakroom. While this could be ideal for an older relative or someone with limited mobility, it could equally make a great study, playroom or snug.
“Then there are three other bedrooms upstairs, as well as two bathrooms,” he adds.
The master bedroom has a large en suite shower room and ample built in wardrobe space. The family bathroom features a bath: “The bedrooms are very comfortable. There is plenty of space upstairs, more than you would expect,” he adds.

PERFECT PLACE
The spectacular rural backdrop to Littlecote has been a daily pleasure for the couple. They have been able to go out walking and cycling, and the surroundings are ideal for anyone with a passion for horse riding.
“At the same time we are just 10 minutes’ drive from the M4, 15 minutes from the M3 and within easy reach of Ascot, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Windsor,” he says. “There is a good choice of train stations for travelling into London and supermarkets for shopping, and Marlowe, which is a lovely place to visit, is just up the road. We have found this a very convenient place to live, offering us good access to everything we need, as well as tranquillity and beautiful views.”

Setting The Scene

Littlecote is set back from the road, with off road parking for up to two cars.
There are formal gardens, as well as a large adjoining paddock, with delightful views of the surrounding farmland and countryside.
The gardens are well-stocked, with flowerbeds, borders, and mature trees and shrubs.
