MOORLANDS, WEST LANE was built in 1905 by a Mr John Thomas Thompson. He built it for his daughter who was getting married. It was then sold to a Mr Park in 1928 who sold it to Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle in 1952.

The house was the temporary residence for the priest Fr. Smith, when St. Marys RC Church was being built in the late fifties.

John Thomas Duffy was moving to Newcastle from Leicester. When working in the area, he saw the house with a 'for sale' sign. He loved the house as soon as he saw it. After enquiring with the agent he left 100 as deposit on the condition that the house was his. The for sale sign had just gone up that day but John went straight back to Moorlands and took it down.

That was December 1961 and Moorlands has been a lovely family home for the last 55 years. John aged 89 (90 in April) hopes that the house will make another family as happy and proud of it as he is.
