The Story

Whether enjoying a glass of wine beside their beautiful pond or walking the dogs in the nearby woods, Simon and Karen Chambers have enjoyed 12 years of rest and relaxation at Alexander House.
“It’s a perfect place to come home to,” says Simon. “We love the peace and quiet, yet we’re only four miles from the centre of Nottingham. It's very homely with lots of character and we've enjoyed watching the children grow up here. We've been especially lucky to have two drawing rooms meaning the children could have their own space and we could have ours.

TALES TO TELL
Built in 1893, the house has a rich history. Television presenter Peter Snow used to live there, and in World War Two it was an officers’ mess. It was also once the home of one of the key hosiery manufacturers in Nottingham. Notwithstanding its interesting residents, the building has an abundance of its own personality, and won Simon and Karen over on their first viewing.
“When we first entered the house into the hallway we were struck with the wow factor.’ The first thing Karen said was that it was the perfect place for a big Christmas tree,” says Simon. “I loved the fact it is an old Victorian residence with high ceilings, plenty of light and lots of big square rooms creating a feeling of space.”

PERIOD STYLE
During their time at Alexander House, Simon and Karen have made it their mission to enhance the building’s Victorian features, preserving cornices and ceiling roses, using period colours and adding beautiful features, such as an antique fireplace originally from the ladies’ waiting room at Manchester Piccadilly railway station. The large, classically stylish kitchen opens on to an equally impressive conservatory, which is one of Simon’s favourite places to spend time.
'I love sitting there looking out over the rear garden. I also love sitting in the rear drawing room looking out of the bay window, in the winter with the fire on, reading a good book.”

A PARTY HOUSE
The large kitchen and conservatory have also come in handy for the many celebrations and gatherings the couple has hosted over the years.
“They make up a sizeable space so everyone tends to congregate there. In good weather we open up the conservatory doors and eat out on the terrace overlooking the back garden. We've had some memorable times, including children's 16rth, 18th and 21st birthdays, our 25th wedding anniversary and our 50th birthdays. For really big events, the garden is large enough for a marquee and we have lots of parking space for guests’ vehicles.”

SAFE PLAY
Simon and Karen raised their three youngest children at Alexander House. The girls all revelled in the space to play while their parents were able to relax knowing they were in a secure environment.
“It’s very safe, totally enclosed, and has plenty of places for them to occupy themselves both indoors and out. They were always having friends round, and at key birthdays we hosted more formal events and barbecues. We’ve enjoyed having good schools nearby and lovely woodland for the children to explore: we are opposite Gedling House Woods.”
The location has made the house a great spot for wildlife: “We are on a private lane so there is very little through traffic. We love listening to the birds in the daytime and the owls at night, and when I walk the dogs I regularly see badgers and foxes, as well as bats circling the streetlights. You wouldn’t believe you were so close to the city.”

FOND MEMORIES
Now that Simon and Karen’s children have left home they are ready to downsize, but they have cherished their time living at Alexander House and feel certain the property will make its new owners as happy as they have been there.
“Leaving here will represent the end of an era for us but the children are now grown up and starting to make own way in life. We will miss the peace and quiet, the tranquillity and all the wildlife, and we’ll miss its perfect location, which is so convenient for shops and the city while also being close to the countryside. We have especially fond memories of it as a place for entertaining: we have had some great functions over the years, both in the house and out in the garden in the summer.”

Setting the scene

Alexander House sits in a beautiful, peaceful, 0.33 acre plot with mature shrubs, fruit trees and plenty of space for parking. The grounds are private and totally enclosed, making it an ideal place for children and pets to run free and play.
'We've got swings and slides and a huge trampoline in the garden which has been a safe haven for our children to enjoy' says Simon.
He and Karen have enjoyed making the most of the garden space, especially in the Summer months. Whether it's to celebrate an event, or simply to unwind after work. The front of the house with it's pond and water fountain, acts as a sun trap. 'We love to eat out there or sit with friends and a glass of wine, watching the dragon flies , the wood pigeons and the bats drink from the pond. The sound of running water is very relaxing' says Simon.
