Greencore Construction is not a normal developer/contractor. They are heavily involved in academic research work to decarbonise the built environment. They work closely with the Building Research Establishment Centre for Innovative Construction Materials (CICM) which is based at the University of Bath and are currently the lead industrial partner in a EU funded R&D project.

Greencore has developed its own high level performance standards. We believe that these standards exceed any other standard currently in use. The performance standard combines the highest levels of sustainability, low energy use and natural, renewable materials. In effect, this means combining the German Passivhaus standard, the UK 2016 Zero Carbon (target) standard AND natural materials such as hemp and timber to deliver true sustainability. This approach is called "Beyond Passiv" and Hawthorns was the first house to put this approach into practice.

The performance of Hawthorns has been carefully monitored for the last 24 months and the results have shown that it is comfortably delivering heating and energy use below the current Passivhaus targets.

The house needs around 2400 units of electricity each year for the heating. This costs about 320GBP per year, compared to a normal house of the same size which could cost 1200GBP to 2400GBP per year to heat.

The whole house is electric and the TOTAL energy use (heating, hot water, lighting, cooking, washing etc) is around 11,400 units of electricity each year. This would normally cost around 1,460GBP per year, however the solar PV panels on the roof generate about 35% of this and the current feed in tariff (FIT) means that the net cost is reduced to between 350GBP and 570GBP per year, depending on the pattern of use. The difference being due to the amount of the free electricity from the PV's that is used in the house.
Probably the most important benefit is the fact that the house is incredibly comfortable to live in.

The house has mechanical ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) and triple glazed timber windows.
Location
Frilford is approximately 8 miles south west of Oxford with the highly regarded Frilford Golf Course and Milletts Farm Centre nearby.

Abingdon and Oxford have a selection of both private and state schools for primary and secondary ages.

The A34 (2.6 miles) provides access to Oxford, M40 and M4 and Didcot Parkway station (9.2 miles) operates a 40 minute service to London Paddingtion.
