The Story

It was about 10 years ago that Mike Vanderkar and his wife were looking for a home that would be comfortable, easy to maintain and in a convenient situation. The property on New Road met their needs perfectly at the time and has been everything they hoped it would be since then.
“We were living in Datchet and so knew the area very well. Our daughters were reaching the stage of going off to university and, while we wanted a house they could return home to, we were also keen to downsize,” he recalls. “My wife instinctively loves character properties and this seemed ideal for us. With three bedrooms it was just the right size, this house is perfect for people who do not want to have to look after a large property and could also be suitable for a young family.”

COTTAGE STYLE
The semi detached house dates back to 1900 and was one of several on the road built by the same local builder.
“It still has its plaque on the front and, together with the one next door, was named Spyonkop Villas by the builder,” says Mike. “It still has a bay window and a brick fireplace in the drawing room.”
The property has been kept in character style by the couple. It has a welcoming, cottage appeal, with stripped wooden doors and rooms decorated in inviting colours.
“Other people in these houses have modernised them or refurbished them significantly. We chose to keep this house pretty much as it was but this sort of property does lend itself to different styles.”

MORNING SUNSHINE
The house has a comfortable layout, which works well for day to day living, says Mike.
“I am semi retired now and spend a lot of my time in the drawing room,” he admits. “Being a family of tradition we do like to sit down to Sunday lunch in the dining room. The kitchen is next door to the dining room, which works well, and has plenty of space for storage and cooking.”
A stable door from the kitchen leads out to the courtyard garden, with its outside dining space, which catches the sun through most of the morning and through into the afternoon.
“It is very pleasant to sit out there having a barbecue in the summer,” he adds.

FAMILY LIVING
Stairs from the dining room lead up to the landing, which gives on to three bedrooms and a family bathroom.
The master bedroom is at the back of the house and has very generous fitted wardrobes. The bedroom at the front of the house is also a very good size, and then there is a smaller bedroom, which could also be used as a study if new owners were looking to be able to work from home: “The family bathroom has both a bath and a power shower,” he adds.

CONVENIENT PLACE
Mike and his family originally moved to Berkshire for its good schools and this corner of Ascot is in particular demand for being in the catchment area for a number of popular establishments, including the outstanding Charters School.
It is just a short drive to Ascot High Street, less than 5 minutes by car, with its array of independent, shops, cafés and restaurants.
“There are lots of nice pubs and restaurants in this area,” says Mike. “My wife works six days a week and there is a lovely pub we like to go to when she finishes on a Saturday evening.”

PLEASANT AREA
There is plenty to do within the Ascot area, from attending the races to playing golf at any one of prestigious golf clubs in the area or spending time at a luxury health and fitness club.
Those who enjoy the great outdoors enjoy being within easy reach of Crown Estate land, including Windsor Great Park and the Savill Garden, for walking.
It is also very easy to get to London and further afield. The property is well located for reaching the M3, M4 and M25, and the railway station, with its trains into London, is just five minutes’ drive away.
“This is a very good area to be in: it is convenient for everything we need and we have very nice neighbours,” Mike adds. “The house itself is homely and suitable for people like us who might be looking for a property that does not require a lot of maintenance.”

Setting The Scene

The house on New Road is set back with a pretty garden and a stream to the front.
A pathway runs down the side of the cottage and leads through to the rear courtyard garden.
The current owners have a small bistro table and chairs to the side of the house. At the back, they have decorated the courtyard garden with some pots and containers, and created an outdoor dining area, which catches the sunshine.
