Norham is a pretty border town with a general store, newsagent, baker, butcher/wine merchant and 2 public houses at its heart. There is also a doctor’s surgery and a first school. Norham Castle, dating back to the 12th century, is an impressive landmark and a focal point of this village. Berwick-upon-Tweed to the east provides further excellent schooling and a comprehensive range of shopping and recreational facilities including The Maltings theatre/cinema. Here there is a busy working harbour and a popular main line railway station giving speedy access to London and Edinburgh.
Norham Station was built in 1851 and came out of operation in 1965. It was a busy station handling goods for local trades including coal and lime. When the station closed, the then station master bought the property and he lovingly maintained and restored the buildings for the general public to enjoy until 2010. The station master’s house is stone with a slate roof and has a rendered extension. Accommodation comprises sitting room, a second reception with open fire, breakfasting kitchen, 3 bedrooms and bathroom. The station itself comprises numerous buildings including signal box, telegraph office, porters room, ticket office, engine shed and goods warehouses. There are 2 further stone buildings which could be converted for various uses – perhaps holidays lets, art/craft studios or a tea room – subject to any relevant consents. There is further scope for holiday lets on the land beyond the platform by the way of pitches for 5 static caravans as well as tourers. The paddock adjacent to the station would be ideal for horses, ponies or sheep.
