Brief information about the Town of Broughton in Furness.
Broughton-in-Furness is a thriving small Market Town at the southern end of the fabulous Lake District National Park. It is well served by having a school, Quality Butcher's, Home Bakers, Fruit and Vegetable Shop, Post Office and Newsagent, an excellent Cafe, a superb Restaurant and 4 well supported public houses! Each year on 1st August, a Proclamation is read out from the steps of the Obelisk warning the public to keep the Queen's peace and not to short-change customers. Those who infringed those rules were placed in the adjacent stocks. Sea fish from Haverigg and fresh water fish from local rivers were sold on market day and the original slate fish slabs are still in situ.
In 1760 the market square was designed by John Gilpin Sawrey, the Lord of the Manor, who lived in nearby Broughton Towers, to imitate the elegant Georgian squares of London. The obelisk in the centre of the Square commemorates the Golden Jubilee of King George 3rd in 1810.
The Town Hall, which dates back to 1766, was once the Market Hall and now houses the Broughton Information Centre and a craft gallery.
Broughton is ideally placed for very easy access to the Southern Lakes and especially to the wonderfully unspoilt Western Lakes. The nearest Railway Station is at Foxfield, about 2 miles away and access to the M6 ( J36 ) is about 40 minutes drive.
