Binns Wood was the home of James Bamforth, a painter and decorator who became a major player in the film-making business before the first Hollywood studio opened in 1911. There are the original Bamforth drawings displayed in the house bathroom of the property. Bamforth had already made his name as a manufacturer of magic lantern slides and film in sets of tableaux. Film historians see Bamforth's films as the earliest examples of British comic film. When war broke out in 1914, movie-making in Holmfirth came to an end. The material used to make film was needed to make explosives. After the war, they never resumed film production. By then, Hollywood had the movie world in its grip and small British producers would have struggled to compete. Bamforth's started to manufacture saucy seaside postcards. Tens of thousands of these were sent home by British and American soldiers fighting in France
The Main House
Internally the property has a variety of period features in addition to the detail to walls and ceiling, including timber panelling to the entrance hallway and landing, window seats to the dining room, decorative fireplaces, original servants bell and deep timber skirting boards.

The house bathroom has a traditional white suite comprising bath, shower cubicle, wash hand basin, bidet and W.C. What is especially unique to the house bathroom are the original Bamforth drawings on the walls, a rare piece of history.
With extensive grounds, which are in addition to the four acres of woodland, which include formal lawned gardens, paved terraces from which spectacular Holme valley views can be enjoyed, external lighting, potting shed and a former lawned tennis court garden.
