The Walled Garden occupies a glorious position on the banks of the River Ayr within Auchincruive Estate, located about 2.5 miles east of Ayr. They were built around 1830, when Auchincruive Estate was then owned by the Oswald family. The gardens are an interesting mix of formal and informal planting, of which most of this has been carried out in the 20th century. The estate itself is included on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, which is a listing of significant gardens in Scotland.
In Ayr, there are excellent amenities including a private co-educational school, cinema, hospital and a wide range of shops supermarkets and restaurants. The town benefits from a wealth of public parks, good path networks and wide sandy beaches on the Firth of Clyde coast.
Well placed for access, Glasgow is about 35 miles distant and can be reached in about 45 minutes driving time via the M77. The railway station in Ayr has regular connections to Glasgow. Prestwick Airport, some 7 miles distant, has frequent international flights.
The Auchincruive Estate was originally laid out in 1723 on behalf of its then owner, Charles Cathcart. The estate was sold in 1764 to Richard Oswald, a rich merchant who commissioned Robert Adam to embellish the house and design the Tea House which stands to the north west of Oswald Hall. George Oswald inherited the estate in 1819 who commissioned further additions to the house. The Oswald family then sold the estate in 1925 to John M Hannah, a local farmer who presented the estate two years later to the West of Scotland Agricultural College. Over the next eighty five years the facilities required by the College were developed at Auchincruive.
The impressive Walled Garden is situated to the north of Oswald Hall and the River Ayr. A report of 1811, describes extensive greenhouses at Auchincruive, well stocked with vines, peaches and rare exotics. The central green house, The Stovehouse remains.
AUCHINCRUIVE MASTER PLAN
Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) has already relocated the majority of its teaching activities from much of the Auchincruive Estate. The Estate extended to a total of over 600 acres and a Master Plan for its future development has been conceived by AWG Property Ltd on behalf of SRUC and a strategy of redevelopment and disposal is now under way.
There is now planning consent (reference 09/01416/PPPM and 13/01332/FURM) to form a new village on the Estate including over 400 houses. It is anticipated that the development will be rolled out over a number of years and phases commencing in 2017.
