HISTORICAL NOTES This is a very fine double pile weaver's house of the late 17c. The house had considerable pretentions for the time with its symmetrical façade, central entry, sill banding and moulded gutter cornice. The sill banding was a status symbol which gave prominence to the number of stories the owner could afford, especially at a time when there were still many single floor houses remaining from the late medieval period.

The house dates from the time of wool handloom weaving. The large number of "weavers' windows" including at the rear, tells us that a good number of outworkers were employed in addition to members of the household. Weaving was often an additional source of income for farming families, but the disposition of the house suggests that the occupation of the owner was as a weaver and/ or textile merchant.

Late in the Georgian period the house was modified by the addition of low wings either side in the Georgian renaissance style and a tall stairs window at the rear, creating a large house of some pretention but which was also sympathetic to its earlier textile function - As "polite" architecture took over from the vernacular at this period, the wealthy no longer wished to reflect any aspect of trade use in their houses, as would a vernacular building - or if they did have weavers' windows, these were at the rear or side only.
