Rose And Crown Inn - A Brief History - Rose and Crown Inn (Rose Crown House) - A Brief History
Originally a public house, serving its final beverage in 1997, the Rose and Crown offers an interesting history dating back to the 1800’s.

John and Martha Brown resided in the cottage opposite the Rose and Crown Inn. John was a traveller half his wife’s age and, during his travels, met and had an affair with another younger woman. Jealous and scorned , Martha murdered her husband with a hatchet and disposed of his remains down a well. The inquest in to his murder was held at the Rose and Crown. Martha was subsequently tried in Dorchester and sentenced to death by hanging.

Martha’s execution was the last public execution at Dorchester and was witnessed by a young Thomas Hardy. He was so shocked by what he saw that he made reference to it in his literary classic Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
