The Story

When the current owner of the apartment at Meadhurst first moved into the property back in 2004, his intention was to stay for a while and then let it out. But, he admits, he loved his home so much he ended up staying there for 10 years.
“Everything about it was just brilliant,” he says. “The location is absolutely fantastic, you are right in the middle of Ascot, just a short walk from shops, the High Street and the station, yet it is also very quiet. I loved being in such a central location and I loved all the space there was inside. It was perfect for me as a single person, there was room for my daughters and for friends to come and stay, and I loved having my own private courtyard garden too, which is something of a rarity with homes like these.”

MODERN KITCHEN
Once part of a large period house that was converted into apartments, he took the property on with the intention of renovating it and was pleased when everything went perfectly to plan.
“I extended at the back of the house, which allowed me to enlarge the kitchen,” he explains. “I was able to make it into a family kitchen dining room, which is a superb space, and again, quite unlike anything you usually find in home like this.”
This room has a well-designed, contemporary style food preparation area, complete with wooden work surfaces and range style cooker. There is a breakfast bar and space for either a dining table and chairs or comfortable seating.

ENTERTAINING SPACE
French doors from the kitchen dining room open up on to the courtyard garden outside.
“This makes it great for entertaining. In the colder weather people can sit round the table inside and when it is warmer everyone can come in and out. I have had many barbecues here over the years,” he says. “The garden catches some sunshine in the morning and then it stays all through the afternoon until about 5pm or 6pm.”
He adds: “It is a garden that is very easy to maintain but is nice because there is some greenery out there, including some attractive lime trees.”

CARFEUL DÉCOR
Also overlooking the garden is the bay window from the drawing room in the apartment.
“This is a good size and very light room, with a feature fireplace and a beautiful wooden floor,” he says. “Like the rest of the property this room displays both the character of the period house, as well as a modern decorative style. I wanted to retain the feel of the original house, maintaining features such as the sash windows, but it is also very contemporary in places. The kitchen dining, in particular, is very modern.”

FLEXIBLE LIVING
With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the apartment is perfect for an individual or couple with friends and family who come to stay. Equally, it could suit two people wishing to share or a young family.
“The main bedroom has a small dressing room and an en suite shower room, which I added,” he explains. “The other bedroom then has use of the family bathroom.”
The presence of the additional bedroom brings great flexibility to the home. New owners may choose to use the space as a study, snug or playroom if that suits their needs.

OUT AND ABOUT
Having moved out of the apartment two years ago, the owner admits he misses everything about his former home.
“It was especially good having everything I wanted right on the doorstep, as well as being so close to the shops, I could walk to Ascot Racecourse, either to go to the racing or to stroll in the grounds,” he says. “The property is also within easy reach of Windsor Great Park, which is excellent if you like running or cycling. I belonged to a running club and tended to be in the park at least twice a week.”
As a keen cyclist, he also liked being able to hop on the saddle and pedal off to the river and some excellent pubs and restaurants.
“It was wonderful having so many nice places to visit in the area,” he adds. “You have all the benefits of the surrounding area here, as well as Ascot itself.”

Setting The Scene

The apartment at Meadhurst benefits from a private courtyard garden. This is a reasonable size, with plenty of space for outdoor furniture.
“Many properties like this have communal gardens, but I really enjoyed having my own outside space,” says the owner.
There is also an outside store room.
