HISTORY
The area surrounding the property holds history dating back to the 1800's Bonnie Scotland in Monk Fryston Park - Mrs. Hemsworth, wife of Reverend Benjamin Hemsworth transformed the ground & gardens around the Hall in the late 1800s/early 1900s. In the adjacent quarry the mountains of "Bonnie Scotland" were created on huge wooden hoardings erected to the face of the quarry to form a spectacular scene with paintings. Mrs. Hemsworth loved art & did much of the painting herself. The history of Monk Fryston shows that the name is likely to be from Monk Freestone as stone quarried from the village built Selby Abbey and was transported from the village to the Abbey on a man-made canal. The Hemsworth’s donated stone (likely to be from our quarry) for the restoration needed after a great fire at the abbey in 1906. The "adjacent quarry" is most certainly ours as the land at the back of the quarry runs round to the hall.
