Castle Hill was built in 1785 by Alexander Bossley, a Bakewell attorney, when he died, unmarried in 1826, it passed to a cousin John Barker, a lead merchant who in turn sold the property to The Duke of Rutland who then installed his agent in the property and soon after stuccoed the property. In the post war period the house became a country club and was then subsequently sold to Derbyshire County Council for use as part of Lady Manner's Grammar school. It was ultimately sold again at which point the stables were converted into dwellings and the main house was once again restored to a high standard to become the family residence it is today.
