Cherry Green, formerly known as Chaureth Green, is registered in the Domesday Book 1086. It is believed that the land was originally worked in 1340 by a a Saxon freeman-farmer who cleared the area, thus forming the green. It is thought that his name was Ceawa and over the years it evolved in spelling and pronunciation to give rise to the word Chauret - hence Chaureth Green. He and his cohorts built their cottages along the southern boundary of the green where the land is higher and overlooks the book. Circa 1450 the property comprised of only two rooms and a passageway and the massive uprights which suppor the principasl parts of the house are, in fact, tree trunks placed root upwards (often mistaken for ship's timbers). This was a strategy which was supposed to allow the sap to run down and prevent rot. These uprights stood on heavy timber sleeper walls placed horizontally at ground level, one of which remains to this day. The others have long since been replaced.
Cherry Green is a small hamlet, close to the village of Henham, which has a thriving village community enjoying numerous
village organisations and has a parish church, village shop and public house. There is also an infant/primary school. The
market town of Bishop's Stortford offers access to the M11 motorway and a mainline railway station. Stansted village offers day
to day shopping facilities, plus a mainline railway station and further schooling. There is also a railway station at Elsenham, and
Londons third international airport is at Stansted.
