Hayes Country Park is located at Battlesbridge, a small village near Wickford in the county of Essex. The Bataille family kept the bridge spanning the River Crouch in good repair and it is from their name, that the village name originates. Battlesbridge is a small rural settlement just off the A130, and is sited in a designated conservation area located at the tidal limit of the river which is now an important crossing point. The Battlesbridge conservation area boundary, is centred around the historic industrial heart of the village where the principal historic buildings are largely associated with the river. The area encompasses marsh and drainage land on both sides of the river Crouch with the bridge being the focus and at the centre of the conservation area.
