TYLERS CROFT - THE HOUSE. THE HOME.

If we think of Tylers Croft as a painting, then the basic canvas was a characterful 1929-1930 built house, designed by George Blair Imrie, a British architect of the Arts and Crafts movement, renowned for his sensitive and individual house designs, and a Lutyens admirer.

Typical of Imrie`s designs, Tylers Croft was built with quality materials such as hand-made tiles, Oak window frames with leaded light glasswork and doors with wrought iron fittings.
The Dutch Gable Roof complimenting the `Tudorbethan` style elevations with their timber beams, giving a pleasing look.
Some of the original windows, with their small sections of glass supported in lead `cames`, remain.

Over the years through enlargements, additions and transformations, Tylers Croft has evolved into the spacious home it is now, with the modern day external elevations, an attractive composition of part-Ivy-covered pitched roofs, dormers, projections and chimneys.

HISTORY

Tylers Croft was built in 1929-1930 by John Gibson to commemorate the marriage of his Daughter Molly, to Author Howard Wilkins. It is their initials that are above the door in the front porch and they were married at the local church, St Mary the Virgin.
Their extended family loved the area so much, that they gradually ended up owning much of the land down Warley Road and also built the house Next Door and Next-Door-But-One.

John Gibson was a great admirer of Edwin Lutyens and so he commissioned the London City architects `Imrie and Angell` (as the Partner George Blair Imrie was also a great advocate of Lutyens), to build his Daughters dream house to an Arts & Crafts style - very popular at the time. The nucleus still strongly shown today.


THE AREA

Great Warley is an ancient parish roughly between Brentwood and Upminster and approaching 3,000 acres comprising predominantly large houses and farms.
The area dates back at least to the year 1040 when it was The `Manor of Warley` and owned by Barking Abbey.

As previously mentioned it offers easy City access via a choice of Harold Wood, Brentwood and Upminster Railway Stations and the A127 is only a 2 mile drive away, giving quick access on to the M25.

There are several very good Primary, Secondary and Private Schools in the area, including the Ursuline Preparatory School, Woodlands Co-Ed School, Brentwood School and the Brentwood Ursuline.
