Tunhill is situated in an elevated, yet sheltered location on the heart of the moor within the Dartmoor National Park. There are no public footpaths across the land and a short walk or ride takes one to open moorland and some of the most beautiful parts of Dartmoor. The well-known village of Widecombe is about a mile and a half distant where there are two local public houses/ restaurants, a parish church, tea rooms and some local shops. Widecombe also has a very popular primary school. The successful South Dartmoor Academy is located in Ashburton, about 5 miles away and there are a variety of private schools within half an hour's drive.
Access to the A38 Expressway, which links Plymouth to Exeter and the motorway network, is 5 miles distant. The market town of Newton Abbot with its main line railway station is about 9 miles.
Tunhill, listed Grade II*, is a former late medieval longhouse which was remodelled in the sixteenth century. Constructed principally of granite under a thatched roof, Tunhill retains its cross-passage and has immense character. The ceiling to the right of the hall is of unusual quality with intersecting upper floor beams and joists which create a chequerboard effect. The dining room has the remains of a stone bench with late sixteenth century or early seventeenth century panelled back. At the far end of this room is an ancient, stone mullioned window with what is believed to be former salt containers below. Immediately behind Tunhill is a stone barn which may have been the original farmhouse. In it is an old stone mullioned window and cobbled flooring. Adjacent to this barn and the farmhouse are an open-fronted stone linhay and attached stone barn, also of some age. These are only a few of the features to be found in this Grade II* listed property. There are few modernised extensively in the twentieth century with the inevitable destruction of much of their architectural worth. Tunhill is a legacy of past life on the moor and is an opportunity to purchase an important part of England's heritage.
Ring-fenced within its own grounds, Tunhill has approximately 25 acres of enclosures, moorland pasture.
