HISTORICAL NOTES This is a double pile weaver's house of the mid 17c.
It retains its chamfered mullions at the rear. A datestone above the main door shows S C M 1764. The front has been rebuilt at some time later and the walling built around the datestone, which provides the date of an earlier rebuilding, when the square section mullions were installed.
The house dates from the time of the peak of handloom weaving as a cottage industry, with spinning taking place near the fire and weaving upstairs in rooms open to the roof.
Pennine houses like this were close to the supply of sheep's wool and the family will have kept livestock and farmed the land, as weavers tended to have mixed income sources.
The house forms part of a group built around a "fold", that is an area where sheep could be penned and sheared.
The meadows were areas usually beyond, but sometimes within, the open field system, where grass for winter fodder could be grown close to where the sheep roamed.
"Top of the Meadows" is precisely this area just beyond the cultivated land.
