PLANNING
In keeping with current Permitted Change of Use Legislation, plans were submitted (May 2014) for planning permission to change the use of all three barns on the Aikrigg site to houses. The written response from South Lakeland District Council confirms that prior approval is not required for the conversion of these three barns into single dwelling houses, as long as certain conditions are met. For the submitted plans and the planning authority's response please see SLDC ref CU/2014/0009 for this barn (known as Barn B), online. (Follow the 'View Plans and Documents' link at bottom of page to find the Decision Notice dated 10 July 2014).

The conditions are: (1) works to begin within 3 years (by July 2017); (2) submission of precise details of the type and arrangement of any new doors and windows, rooflights, flues, rainwater good and any other vent and soil pipes (external alterations) to planners will be required; (3) natural slate roofing will be required; (4) the external doors and windows are to be of recessed painted timber of spec to be approved; (5) approved surfacing must be used to yards, parking spaces and landscaping; (6) new boundary walls are to be of stone matching the barns. There is also a note that if bats as a protected species are found an environmental consultant must be contacted.

We are also advised that there will be a time limit for the development of each barn, to be set at conveyancing, expected to be two years from sale to complete each property.

NATIONAL PARK
The barns at Aikrigg Farm, Killington are due to be included within the revised boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park from August 2016.
