The Story

SURPRISE SPACE
The six-bedroom property is full of wonderful surprises with galleries, cavernous ceilings, exposed beams and large expanses of glass letting the sunshine flood in.
“We had a very definite idea in our heads of what we wanted, but due to planning rules we had to design a house which looked like a bungalow – but thanks to the clever vision of the architect, what is a bungalow at the front, transforms into a bright and spacious two storey building at the back,” he says. “You walk into our fabulous, double-height entrance hall, with its enormous elegant chandelier hanging down, and everyone says they are wowed by the space and light before them.”

STREAMING SUNSHINE
The house has been finished to the highest standard, with clean, classic décor throughout.
“The drawing room has an enormous cathedral ceiling and is always full of sunshine, with huge French windows opening straight on to the garden creating a fabulous space in the summer,” he says. “Beams run through the room, and the central brick fireplace, with its locally made bespoke grate and basket, is a real focal point, and lovely and cosy in the winter.” Next door is a fantastic bright and airy family room, which is full of character.”

HUB OF THE HOME
At the heart of the house is the impressive kitchen and breakfast room. “We wanted to create a very special kitchen where everyone could be together. It is very modern in style, mixing high gloss white and stainless steel,” says Roger. “We both like to entertain. There is a large breakfast bar where people tend to gather and a large dining area, which easily seats 12 people. “Like the rest of the house, it is always sunny, with French windows opening on to a private terrace which is the perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee.”
Leading off the kitchen is one of the couple’s favourite features of the house – a very unique central courtyard. “The architect designed this inner atrium, which is fully enclosed by walls but completely open to the sky. It feels incredibly private and peaceful,” he smiles. “My wife loves the tennis and in the summer, she sits in the atrium in the sunshine with her glass of wine watching Wimbledon.”

SUNNY SURROUNDS
The couple, who have four children, extended the property in 1988, adding a further bedroom and two-bedroom annexe. “Our master suite is just lovely, with its own en suite shower room and spacious dressing room. It always feels very peaceful and the morning sun floods in through one window and you can enjoy watching it set through another,” he says. The annexe, which has been completely refurbished, has its own kitchen and large sitting room, with French windows opening to a private sunny terrace.
“The annexe is fantastic as it offers real flexibility, especially if you have a large family. It can be fully self-contained as it has its own front door, or used as part of the main house, which is great if you want extra space for teenagers.”

A PLACE FOR FUN
Outside, the property is surrounded by pretty gardens, with plenty of sunny places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.
“One of the nicest memories I have of living here was when our eldest daughter turned 21. We held a party for all her friends and our family with a marquee in the garden. We played giant garden games and everyone had a brilliant time,” says Roger.
“It was a fantastic house for the kids growing up as they had so much space. It was always the house where the children and all their friends would come to hang out. I think they liked being able to vanish and have their own space. It is a very happy home.”

Setting The Scene

The property, which is only a few minutes away from the centre of Leighton Buzzard, is set in large gardens with its own private driveway and is surrounded by trees and greenery. The garden is a real sun trap with pretty mature borders, a large terrace area and a mature lawn which is great for the family. The design of the property means that it combines inside and outside space beautifully. French windows open up the rooms to the garden which is perfect for entertaining and parties. The secret courtyard hidden inside the house has a seating area and is full of pretty pots, making it a wonderful place to enjoy some sunshine and peace and quiet.
