DESCRIPTION Mariners Cottage is an elegant Victorian village house with yellow stock brick frontage below tiled roofs standing toward the east end of Pakefield Street and within sight of the sea. Mariners Cottage has undergone an extensive programme of refurbishment whilst retaining the charm and character of the original building. Believed to date from 1860 and built by George Meeke Warford the coxswain of Pakefield Lifeboat for 33 years. Mariners Cottage has well planned and beautifully presented accommodation featuring spacious entrance hall with pattern tiled floor, both reception rooms having plaster cornice, ceiling roses and cast iron fireplaces. The cloakroom is fitted with a Victorian style suite and the kitchen/breakfast room with a stylish range of Shaker style units with hardwood work surfaces and integrated appliances. A feature circular window borrows light from the hall. On the first floor a spacious galleried landing opens to the large family bathroom, again elegantly fitted with freestanding bath, separate shower, twin basins and W.C. Mariners Cottage has four double bedrooms, the two principle bedrooms having plaster cornice, picture rails and cast iron fireplaces and a glimpse of the sea. To one side of the property is a driveway providing off street parking and access to a courtyard garden. To the rear is a large outbuilding offering potential for garaging and workshop or conversion to further accommodation subject to the necessary planning consent.
LOCATION The village of Pakefield is situated approximately one mile from the centre of the coastal town of Lowestoft. Pakefield is a sought after suburb with a thriving community with the beach on its doorstep. This popular location benefits from a range of amenities including schools, public houses, shops and the main bus road and rail routes are easily accessed.

HISTORICAL NOTE Mariners Cottage, believed to date from around 1860 constructed by George Meeke Warford. He was coxswain of Pakefield lifeboat for 33 years, saving over 150 lives and assisted in the rescue of at least another 236. He retired in 1899 with the silver medal and clasp as recognition for his service. Many of the rescued seafarers were brought to Mariners Cottage where they were cared for in one of the upstairs rooms, which is now the bathroom. The only access at the time was thought to be via a hatch in the ceiling from the scullery below. During renovations in the 1960s the trap door and steps were revealed at the side of the kitchen fireplace. It is thought that this access was created to protect George Warford's many daughters, who's rooms were elsewhere in the cottage. In all George Warford had 13 children, nine daughters and four sons. He eventually retired and became the landlord of The Old Ship Inn. A small piece of the last boat rescued by Warford was fashioned into a nameplate for Mariners Cottage, which is still at the property today.
