The conservation village of Straiton is situated on the Water of Girvan and dates back to 1760. Blairquhan Castle, only a short walk from Milton Mill, is in private ownership but can be taken for exclusive use or as a wedding venue. The Ayrshire coast is renowned for its prime golfing terrain with the Championship courses at Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick, which was home of the first Open Championship in 1860, as well as good local courses at Maybole, Brunston Castle and Girvan. The nearby Carrick Hills and Galloway Forest Park offer extensive hill walking, climbing, cycling and trekking. There are numerous trails starting from the village offering stunning views and good opportunities to spot local flora and fauna. For those who enjoy sailing, Girvan has a large harbour from which there are regular trips to Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde. Fishing permits can be bought for the River Girvan, and there are many lochs in the Galloway Forest Park.
