Historical Note
The Glentruim branch of the Macpherson family has lived in its present home since the early part of the last century. At that time it was purchased from the Duke of Gordon, before which the family had lived nearby for almost 1,000 years. They are descended from the family of Cluny Macpherson, Chief of the Clan Macpherson, which in centuries past played such a significant part in the history of the Highlands. The family are the last descendants still having land in Badenoch.
Below Glentruim on the flat fields in the valley of the River Spey is a place where in 1398 was fought the battle of Invernahavon. At that time the Clans Macintosh, Macpherson and Davidson formed Clan Chattan and together they owned all the land between Glentruim and Inverness; becoming very powerful, they started to levy taxes on their neighbours, the Camerons. The Camerons marched into Invernahavon but before the battle took place the Macphersons insisted that they have the place of honour on the right flank and when their allies the Macintoshes and Davidsons refused they retired from the battle to the glacial ridges immediately below Glentruim, which can still be seen today. However, when their allies were in danger of losing the battle they drew their swords and put the Camerons to flight. They pursued the Cameron Chief, called Charles, where they caught up with him and killed him. To this day the hill is called Corharlich. After the battle of Culloden in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Chief of Clan Macpherson hid in the mountains south of Glentruim and when the Prince escaped to France, Cluny Macpherson, the Chief, hid in a cave on the opposite side of the valley and within sight of Glentruim. He remained in hiding for nine years with a reward of 1,000 for his capture but nobody betrayed him, and eventually he too, following the Prince's footsteps, escaped to France.

The historic Glentruim Estate is located near the confluence of the Rivers Spey and Truim, three miles south of the village of Newtonmore. It is at the gateway to the Cairngorms National Park, Britain's largest National Park and the geographical heart of Scotland. You will see a brown road sign for "Laggan/Glentruim". Exit left at this sign, onto a single track road. Follow this road down the hill and across the bridge, over the River Truim. Carry on up the hill for 300 metres until you see the black iron entrance gates to the estate on the right hand side. Enter here and follow the driveway up through the estate. Gate Lodge is just inside the gates on the left side. Glentruim House is approximately400 metres along the driveway
