The Story

Generations of the same family have been waking up to the magnificent surroundings of Hilly Close. The splendid plot has been in Susan Wood’s family for three generations and has been her own home for the past 20 years, explains her husband David.
“The family had a bungalow here, which we took down to build the five-bedroom house we now live in,” he says. “It has always been called Hilly Close and it was Susan’s grandfather planted a walnut tree in the garden.”
He adds: “We decided we wanted to stay and build our own home here because it was such a beautiful location, and in a lovely village.”

SPACIOUS HOME
The current incarnation of Hilly Close was architect-designed to create well-proportioned living spaces and generous family sleeping accommodation. “Because it was a large plot we wanted to create a spacious home that sat well within it,” recalls David. “We had three children – and grandchildren starting to come along at the time – and so were keen to have five bedrooms and three bathrooms, and rooms that were large and airy.” The property has a bright, modern feel and is well-balanced, with accommodation to both sides. It is a spacious country home, which is deep as well as long, and has light pouring in from all sides through an abundance of windows and French windows.

CLEVER DESIGN
To one side of the central entrance hall is the long drawing room that reaches from front to back of the house and opens up on to the garden. “This is a wonderful room, with plenty of room for a baby grand piano and a fireplace. It is probably my favourite room but is admittedly really only used on special occasions or if we have a lot of people here: when it is just the two of us we tend to use the snug more.” The ground floor of the house also comprises the study, dining room and kitchen breakfast room, together with a very roomy utility room and a cloakroom. “Then upstairs, the master bedroom has its own bathroom and dressing room, while the other four bedrooms share the two family bathrooms,” he adds.

PANORAMIC VIEWS
The kitchen breakfast room is an excellent family space, with room for a table, where casual meals are enjoyed. “We have a double oven in there, which includes three separate oven spaces and a microwave, making it ideal for a large family or at Christmas,” David says. “This has been a very easy place to entertain too and a comfortable place for our three children and (now nine) grandchildren to stay.” Rooms across the house take in the spectacular views out across the verdant garden and the scenic countryside beyond.
“We feel so lucky to have enjoyed panoramic views here and have decided that wherever we move to next also has to have a wonderful outlook.”

WONDERFUL COLOUR
In the spring and summer they spend as much time as they can out in the garden, appreciating the tranquillity of the surroundings “We sit out there sometimes and hear nothing but the sounds of the birds in the trees and the sheep in the back field. There used to be an orchard here and we still have apple, pear and plum trees: we cut some back to open up the views and have left most of the garden as lawn because it is so easy to maintain.”
Hanging baskets filled with begonias bring additional colour to both the front and back of the house.

EXCELLENT LOCATION
Life in Stoke Goldington has been equally pleasurable. Situated about 10 miles from Milton Keynes and four miles from Newport Pagnell, it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was recorded as “Stoche.” Today it boasts a church, shop, pub and two schools. There is also a recreation ground and 12th century church, which the Woods are heavily involved with and enjoy fundraising for. Nearby Salcey Forest is a wonderful place to visit, with places walk and ride. There is a tree top trail that rises to 15 metres above the woodland floor, with a crow’s nest platform at 20 metres reached by steps. “When the children come they like to go to the recreation ground and of course it is very easy to get into Milton Keynes, with all its leisure facilities, too,” says David. “We have enjoyed all of this but have especially loved village life and sitting in the garden with a glass of something, relaxing and listening to the birds.”

Setting The Scene

Hill Close is set in grounds of approximately half an acre, with a private driveway and parking for a number of vehicles, as well as a double garage.
There is an adjoined glasshouse, complete with a mature vine, and a number of fruit trees in the grounds. The large, lawned rear garden has mature flower beds and an extensive terrace for outside living. The plot backs onto open farmland.
