The Story

It often feels as if there is no need to leave the house on Bedford Road – it has absolutely everything its owners could possibly want. The current owner has lived in the house for 14 years and during that time has increased its accommodation substantially.
“We bought the property because we could see the potential for enlarging it and because it had such a large garden,” he says. “I have been working on this house non-stop since we moved in, carrying out extensions and renovating it. It is now a fantastic place to live and ideal for an extended family or someone wishing to work from home.”

SUPERB SPACE
The house is set back from the road, with a gated driveway offering off-road parking. At the back, the large garden includes an extensive terrace, with space for outside dining and relaxation. There is a long lawn and access to the annexe and other outbuildings.
“I have doubled the size of the main house, adding a fantastic master bedroom, with an en suite bathroom, and a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area,” he says. “We now have four bedrooms in the main house and an annexe, as well as three bathrooms and four or five reception rooms.”

PARTY HOUSE
At the back of the house there is now a large kitchen, dining and family area, which opens out on to the garden.
“It is wonderful having such a fantastic, open-plan space at the back of the house – people can be sitting in different areas or even outside if the bi-folding doors are open and everyone can still communicate.”
The living area is enormous, with generous space for daily life and for entertaining.
“It opens on to the huge terrace I created, where we have had lots of parties every year. The one we all enjoy most I think is Fireworks Night, when get the 14ft barbecue going and lots of friends come round: the most we have ever had was 60.”

DETACHED ANNEXE
In addition to the astounding space in the main, however, the presence of the annexe and the studio bring even more flexibility.
“The annexe is completely detached from the main house and has its own bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and kitchen. It is ideal for someone who wants to live close by but to have their independence. My mum lived there for five or six years and now I am using it as an office. It could have all sorts of uses to suit new owners.”
The studio is also completely separate from the main house: “At the moment this is used as a hairdressing salon and semi-permanent make-up room by my wife who does make-up and hair but again it could have all sorts of possibilities.”

VILLAGE LIFE
The family have enjoyed their time at Houghton Conquest. The village is very friendly, with a shop, a selection of family pubs, a village hall and an excellent lower school with great upper school catchment.
“It has been great being in the catchment areas for such good schools,” he says. “We are also lucky enough to have a restaurant here that people travel miles to eat at.”
At the weekends they like to relax at home but if they do fancy a walk there are lots of places to go. Marsden Vale is always a popular choice, where the Millennium Country Park offers 225 hectares of beautiful woodlands, wetlands and grasslands, surrounding our meadow and lakes to explore.
“This is perfect for anyone who enjoys dog walking, horse-riding or cycling.”

HAPPY HOME
The village also enjoys good proximity to the major centres of Bedford, Northampton, Luton and Milton Keynes, with all their shopping and leisure facilities.
“We do have good local shopping but it is also nice to be able to go into Milton Keynes too, where there are much bigger areas. Travel from here to other places is also very easy as we can pick up the A1 and the M1 – it is quick to get to Stevenage, for example,” he says. “Living here has worked well for us for all sorts of reasons. The position is very good but the house itself is also excellent. It has given us so much space to really enjoy and the opportunity to really make the most of the property in a number of different ways.”

Setting the scene

The gardens at the Bedford Road house have given the owners as much pleasure as the house itself. They have been developed to provide a private, quiet and safe place for children and pets.
Additional outbuildings consist of detached office building for those who work from home or run a business. There is a double garage and ample parking for multiple vehicles.
