The Story

Looking out from the front of The Gables, the owners of the splendid, six-bedroom home never fail to be transfixed by the views before them. Their magnificent home was designed to capture the beauty of its incredible setting, with its main living spaces and two of the bedrooms upstairs taking in the panoramic vistas. "I never get tired of standing there and looking out," one of them says. "You can see the weather rolling in across the vast expanse of sky and the scenery changing as you watch it. It was the setting of the house that first attracted us, as well as the plot size and the good access to Cardiff, the motorway, the Brecon Beacons and the coastline."

SPACIOUS FAMILY HOME
The Gables, which dates back to the 1950s, has only ever had one previous owner; he designed and built it as a single-storey home to his own specifications. "We bought it because we could see it had the potential to become an ideal home for us," she says. "We thought about how we wanted it to be, achieved planning permission and then had it turned into a three-storey house. It was already very well laid out and by extending it upwards we were able to turn it into a well-proportioned family home, which we have been very pleased with."

LIGHT AND AIRY
The Gables is entered via a large lobby and very generous entrance hall: this is light and airy. "We were able to restore the original hardwood parquet floor in here, which makes it very warm and welcoming," she points out. To the left is the large drawing and dining room, which is double aspect with French windows at either end. "In winter time, we tend to gather round the wood-burning stove in here," she says. There is a study and cloakroom, and then to the right a sizeable kitchen breakfast room, which leads to the utility room. "We chose a wooden kitchen, with Ivory Shaker-style units, dark work surfaces and a breakfast bar; there is a natural limestone floor in here, making it feel very light and airy."

WELCOMING GUESTS
The arrangement of the rooms downstairs has been perfect for daily life and special occasions, she suggests. "The kitchen breakfast room is a very good family space and there is always somewhere in this house for people to spread out into. We often have friends and family to stay - my sister and her family tend to come here in the summer so they can enjoy the Welsh coastline." Four double bedrooms, three of which have en suite shower rooms, are situated on the first floor. There is also a family bathroom and a smaller bedroom, which could also be a study or dressing room.

LEISURE TIME
Two more very sizeable and light bedrooms are located on the top floor of The Gables. One of these is currently used as a games or hobby room - but the whole floor could be ideal for teenagers or new owners seeking somewhere to work away from the heart of the house. "This has been fantastic for the boys, giving them so much space to use for whatever their latest project is," she says. "We also have an outbuilding which they have enjoyed using: this is where our youngest has extended his woodworking skills"

OUT AND ABOUT
Leisure time is often spent out in the garden, relaxing over a barbecue or watching the buzzards and the occasional Red Kite soar overhead. "We also enjoy walking in the Brecon Beacons, which are half an hour's drive away, or up our nearest mountain The Garth, only ten minutes away with fantastic views over Cardiff and the Bristol Channel. "We also like going on day trips to West Wales - it only takes us two hours to get to St David's from here." She adds: "We are so lucky living here - we are within easy reach of Cardiff and yet we also have beautiful countryside right on our doorstep. We really do enjoy the best of both worlds."

Setting The Scene

The Gables is set back from the road, overlooking the Vale of Glamorgan. There is a driveway providing plenty of off-road parking to the front and to the side of the house. At the back, the house opens on to a garden with a large terrace for entertaining and a lawn with a deep border of flowering shrubs. Here there are also outbuildings, including a double garage with remote controlled roller door.
