Ty Unnos was commissioned and built as a concept house by The Welsh Assembly Government in conjunction with The Works and formed part of the “Welsh Future Homes Exhibition” with in the former Corus Steel site at Ebbw Vale.
Ty Unnos was built to reflect the heritage of the area, its shape is based on the traditional Welsh Longhouse, and its timber frame reflects the tradition of build a house in one night, hence the name, Ty meaning house, Unnos meaning night.The build principals follow the Passivhaus (German for passive house) system, where the house is built in a way that reduces its ecological footprint, this is done by using as little energy as possible. These objectives are achieved by using sustainable components and products made in Wales, triple glazed windows, super insulation and the elimination of draughts. The house retains heat generated inside the property and is supplemented by solar panels and a heat exchange system which aids ventilation and provides fresh air without the loss of heat during the winter.
