The Story

LAKESIDE POSITION
The spectacular results took nine months to achieve and the couple managed the project themselves to ensure the renovation met their high specifications. The five-bedroom house is situated in the prestigious Burwood Estate. On first viewing, the couple liked the family-feel of the secure estate, as well as its natural woodland aspect, and the fact the house stands beside a lake.
“My wife saw the house first, but it wasn’t until the second viewing that we both noticed the lake,” says Vanash. “We discovered a little gate at the bottom of the garden giving access the lake and really that is what sold it to us.”

STUNNING VIEWS
To take full advantage of the garden and lake views, the couple built a two-storey extension providing them with a family or cinema room, study, and master bedroom suite as well as extending both the kitchen and another bedroom.
“We really opened up the back of house so that all the main living areas and bedrooms have views across the garden and lake,” he says.“The house is south-facing so we installed glazed windows and bi-folding doors to make it is very bright, light and airy.”
The work took nine months to complete and when it came to the interior decor, the couple did not cut any corners.
“We wanted it to have a contemporary feel and high-end finish so we used fixtures and fittings from Villeroy & Boch in all the bathrooms. There are Italian porcelain tiles in the kitchen, dining room and hall as well as bespoke black-stained oak doors with aluminium trims throughout,” explains Vanash.

FORMAL AND INFORMAL
Technology and energy efficiency have also been utilised with features such as underfloor heating and a low maintenance render on the exterior walls.
Vanash says: “We have installed an intelligent lighting system I can control from my iPhone and there is a state-of-the-art home cinema system in the play room.”
The living space has been divided into informal and formal parts. The bespoke kitchen separates two zones, however the open-plan styling means the adults can be in the drawing or dining room while keeping an eye on the children in the family room.
“Next to the drawing room is the snug where we have a piano and use as a music room,” he says. “There is also a huge sofa and a drinks cabinet, which is where we serve pre-dinner drinks before moving through to the dining room.”

THE OUTSIDE IN
Edge House is often filled with friends and family for winter dinner parties or garden parties in the summer.
“Because all of the main rooms at the back of the house have doors opening to the terrace, we can throw them all open and together with the garden create one huge entertaining space,” says Vanash. “We surprised our daughter by organising a surprise birthday party for her and invited about 20 of her friends who all played in the garden.”

FAST COMMUTE
Aside from its fabulous woodland and lakeside setting, Edge House is also just a five-minute walk from the nearest train station at Walton-on-the-Thames providing a frequent and fast service into central London.
“From door to door, I can be in London in 35 minutes, which for me is one of the most important bonuses of living here,” says Vanash.
The estate is equidistant from Walton, Esher and Weybridge so the family have a choice of venues for shopping and if they fancy a stroll to the local pub, they can do that too.
“We really love this house and location. My wife and I have enjoyed doing up the house so much we have decided to look for another project to do.”

Setting The Scene

The 360-acre Burwood Estate is an area of outstanding natural beauty and provides a tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
Edge House occupies a two-third of an acre site and features an extensive front garden and brick-paved, ample parking area accessed by an electric gate.
The gardens have been beautifully landscaped and zoned to provide both play and entertaining areas. The manicured side of the garden gives way to the children’s play area equipped with playhouse, slide, swing and seesaw.
As well as mature trees, the owners who both enjoy gardening, have planted a range of trees, shrubs and flowers including olive, magnolia, Japanese maple, acers and hydrangeas.
There is a large terrace and an eye-catching, central water feature featuring a metallic ball with water cascading over.
