THE STORY

Soaking up the sunshine at the back of her attractive, modern home, the owner of The Highway savours the serenity. "This is a very peaceful, relaxing place to be - it is a great home within which to find sanctuary from everything that is going on in the busy world," she points out. "I am not overlooked here at all and I have beautiful views on to my own garden and the leafy trees around it. I can lie in bed in the morning and watch the woodpecker flying about. It recently had babies and I was able to watch it look after and raise them. This has been the perfect place for me and my son to relax and enjoy spending some quiet time."

MODERN INTERIOR

The Highway was ready to move into when she bought it but since then she has updated it and given it a few special touches of her own. "I have made it quite contemporary and sleek inside," she explains. "It is very bright and minimalist in style." The kitchen, for example, has recently been replaced with a state-of-the-art Italian design, featuring a fabulous curved island, white high gloss, handle-free units and cutting-edge lighting. "I put my heart and soul into the kitchen," she says. "I wanted everything to be exactly right: it needed to look good but to be easy to use as well so it has three hobs, two ovens, a warming drawer and a microwave." She adds: "It is a wonderful kitchen, which is truly unique."

BEAUTIFUL SUNSHINE

The ground floor of the house has been arranged to include a formal drawing room, study, downstairs utility room and cloakroom. The whole back of the house is one exceptional kitchen, dining and family space, which has bi-folding doors that can be pulled right back on to the entertaining terrace and garden. "Sun streams into this part of the house, making it lovely to sit in either in the kitchen or just outside," she says. "It always feels so secluded." This sizable area has plenty of space for a dining table and comfortable seating, as well as the generous kitchen area. It is perfect for both entertaining and family life, opening seamlessly on to the garden. "This is a great house for parties," she admits.

MORNING VIEWS

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms and three bath or shower rooms. The master bedroom and main guest room each have an en suite shower room. The other two rooms share the family bathroom. "The master bedroom has French windows that can be opened up on to the Juliet balcony on warm summer mornings," she says. With so much space, it has been easy to accommodate friends and family on occasion.

NATURAL WORLD

The garden has been well-maintained and offers good space for children to play and adults to relax. "We have enjoyed sitting out there quietly or going for a walk in the forest," she says. "The beauty of this location is that you have so many lovely places to spend time in the area and yet you can walk to the shop in just five minutes." Mersea Island, with its beaches, pubs and restaurants is a favourite place to visit and Abberton Reservoir is the perfect spot for nature lovers. This huge expanse of water offers spectacular panoramic views; it plays host to some 40,000 wetland birds each year. Access can be gained on footpaths, which take visitors to several viewing areas. "We also enjoy going to Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve or over to Brightlingsea, where my son does his sailing."

BRIGHT SPACE

Just a short drive from Colchester, The Highway also offers good access to a wide range of shops, schools and leisure facilities. It is within easy reach of the A12, as well as stations with trains into London. "This is a wonderful location because everything you need is just a short drive away and yet it is so peaceful and private," she says. "I know I will miss that desperately when I leave. I will also miss the bright, sunny space this house offers but I also know the next owners will love it just as much as I have done."

SETTING THE SCENE

The Highway is set back the road, accessed by a gravel driveway and provides off street parking for severall vehicles. With an overall plot size of approminately 0.4 acre, theire is a very private large rear garden witth fencing, matures bushes, trees and high hedges, backing onto the woodland that forms part of Friday Woods.
