The Calwich Abbey Estate includes the site of the 12th Century Augustinian Abbey that originated as a cell of the Kenilworth Priory and it is clear from historical notes that this was neither a wealthy, nor substantial Abbey due partly to the proximity of the Abbeys at Rocester and Croxden. It survived as an Abbey until the 16th Century and in 1543 the Crown granted the property to a John Fleetwood and it is reported that at the end of that century the family had converted the Priory Church to a dwelling. The Priory site was purchased from the Fleetwood family by Bernard Granville who built a house there and on his death in 1775 he bequeathed the property to his nephew, the Reverend John D'Ewes, who assumed the surname of Granville.
