The Royal Burgh of Lochmaben was so created in or around 1479, but its documented existence can be traced back to 1170, when Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale, gifted the revenues from Lochmaben Church to Guisburgh Abbey. It is, of course, the connection with the Bruce family, and Robert the Bruce in particular, that Lochmaben is so proud of, as can be seen by the imposing statue at the head of the town's High Street.
The Burgh lies at the heart of Annandale, and offers easy access to the Regional centre of Dumfries (eight miles) with its full range of shopping, recreational and leisure facilities, including the major chain stores, two cinemas and an Ice Rink. Lockerbie, four miles away, has an Ice Rink, supermarket and the local six-year secondary school. Lockerbie is also on the main west coast rail line which gives convenient access to the national rail network. The main route between Scotland and England, the M74, lies just ten minutes' drive from Lochmaben.
