The property was built in 1881 by Thomas Walker, the contractor of the Severn Railway Tunnel as a coffee house and reading rooms for his workforce. In 1886 after the tunnel was completed, the building became Marshalls Stores, grocers, drapers and general stores. It was the largest in the area and was described as an emporium which sold everything from a pin to an anchor! It remained an essential part of village life until its closure in 1956. The building then passed into the hands of Sudbrook Mill before being purchased in 1986 by the present owners who restored it into a family home and restoration business.
