General Information:
The croft of 'Easterhouse' is situated on the east side of the island of Yell, a couple of miles from Mid Yell the main population centre on the island.

Measuring about 19 miles long by 7.5 miles wide, Yell is the largest of Shetland's North Isles, with a population of around 950. It is connected to mainland Shetland by an excellent 20 minute ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from the ferry terminal at Ulsta at the south end of the island (approx. 13 miles from Easterhouse) to Toft about 10 minutes from Brae & Sullom Voe, and approximately 27 miles from Lerwick, Shetland's capital. A ferry from Gutcher at the north end of Yell runs to the neighbouring island of Unst.

Although remote, the island has excellent local amenities most of which are situated in nearby Mid Yell and include the Junior High School, a fantastic leisure centre & heated indoor swimming pool, the local shop & post office (with fuel pumps) down by the pier, medical centre including dental surgery, and various community halls. There is another shop at Aywick about three miles to the south, and also at Ulsta by the ferry.

The island, much of the island is uninhabited moorland, has picturesque scenery with a long and varied coastline and beautiful beaches at Breckon and West Sandwick. There is plenty to offer walkers and wildlife enthusiasts; in particular it is one of the best places in Shetland to spot otters, indeed otters are often seen at Easterhouse.

The Shetland Islands themselves lie in the middle of the North Sea about 100 miles north of mainland Scotland, and are in fact closer to Bergen in Norway than to Edinburgh. A daily overnight ferry service run by Northlink Ferries links Shetland with Aberdeen & Orkney, and there are regular flights by Flybe to Sumburgh Airport at the southern end of Shetland, from Aberdeen, Glasgow & Edinburgh, islanders being entitled to discounted ferry and air fares.

Accommodation:
Living room with kitchen area off, double bedroom, bathroom, hallway & former byre / store.
