Location

Hammoon is a small hamlet located in the Blackmore Vale. There are a number of local towns of note including Sturminster Newton, Blandford, Shaftesbury, Gillingham and Sherborne which provide a good variety of shopping, educational, recreational and cultural facilities.

There are mainline railway stations at Sherborne and Gillingham with a direct service to London Waterloo. The A303 is located to the north at Wincanton and provides a route towards London and the Home Counties as well as to the West Country.

The area is well served by independent schools at Bryanston, Sherborne School for Boys, Sherborne School for Girls, Sherborne Preparatory School, Hanford, Knighton House, Clayesmore, Port Regis and Canford.

Sporting facilities in the area include golf at Sherborne and Rushmore, horse racing at Wincanton, Exeter and Bath and water sports can be enjoyed to the south along the Dorset coastline at Poole Harbour and Weymouth Bay.

Description

In the 1890s the second Viscount Portman who built Bryanston also built three hunting lodges nearby, one of which is Hammoon House. It was built in 1893 and has stuccoed elevations under a slate roof. The house remained part of the Portman Estate until 1923 when it became part of a large lotted sale when the Portman Estate was broken up.

The property now has excellent accommodation which comprises four elegant reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room , orangery and boot room with a good size master bedroom suite, five further bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shower room on the first floor. The second floor has two more bedrooms and a shower room.

Features include original stone and oak floors, open fireplaces in the sitting room, drawing room and breakfast room and many rooms with fantastic views over the gardens and water meadows towards the surrounding countryside.

The gates open onto a gravelled parking area with an adjacent Coach House which has been converted to provide a ground floor garage and a studio with kitchenette and space for a bathroom or shower room. On the first floor is a games room.

The principal gardens are to the south and west of the house and are predominantly laid to lawn with well stocked flower beds and borders and a paved terrace. There is a walled garden with a heated swimming pool and pool house.

To the east of the house is a ha-ha which separates the gardens from a series of three meadows which lead down to the River Stour. The river has single bank fishing over approximately 854 yards.
