'Headlands' is situated in the Dunrossness area of the South Mainland of Shetland, approximately 22 miles south of Lerwick.

The main local amenities in the area are situated just under two miles north of the house these including Mainland's mini-supermarket & post office, plus fuel pumps, and the area's primary school, older pupils going to Sandwick or Lerwick.

There is also another local shop at Toab to the south, a hotel at Sumburgh, and boating club and marina at the Pool of Virkie. Also within easy reach is the airport which provides links to mainland Scotland, whilst buses to Lerwick from the stop on the main road by the house.

Nearby places of interest include Sumburgh Head where a huge variety of bird life can be seen, Jarlshof, Old Scatness broch, Quendale Mill and slightly further afield Loch of Spiggie RSPB Reserve and St Ninian's Isle at Bigton.

The house was built around 1970 of cavity concrete blockwork construction. Windows are double glazed and central heating is provided by a 'Warmflow' condensing boiler in the utility room which also provides hot water via a pressurised hot water cylinder with electric back up. A working open fire in the sittingroom provides a cosy alternative heat source.
