The village was recorded as Bodeton in the Domesday Book, meaning bow in the river, and the smaller green contains the remains of a 13th Century stone cross and old stocks.

Close to major road links, the village is highly accessible - Clitheroe 7 miles, Skipton 14.5 miles, Burnley 16 miles, Blackburn 17 miles, Manchester 37.5 miles and Leeds 41 miles approximately. The nearest train station is at Clitheroe on the Northern Rail Ribble Valley line.

There are various ways into Bolton-by-Bowland. Travelling from Skipton, take the A59 to Gisburn. Drive through Gisburn town centre and take the right hand turning to Bolton-by-Bowland (next to Gisburn Auction Mart). Follow the road for approximately 3 miles and proceed into the village. Number 7 Gisburn Road can be found on the right hand side of the road, just past the village green.

From the M6, take the A59 to Sawley (Clitheroe).Turn left signposted Sawley/Bolton-by-Bowland. Follow the road through Sawley, proceed over the river bridge and turn right. Follow the road into the village and from outside The Coach and Horses (closed at the moment) proceed up the hill towards the church and and the cottage is immediately after the church, just before the village green and the school.

From the A65, heading east - after passing The Craven Arms at Settle on the left hand side, take the second turning on the right signposted Rathmell. Continue through the village of Wigglesworth and at the 'T' junction turn right. Take the next turning left signposted Bolton-by-Bowland and at the 'T' junction, turn left onto Hellifield Road. Continue as from the M6.
