Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Fyfield Hall is a timber framed aisled house which dates from around 1170 and was the main manor of Fyfield and once had 210 acres of land. At the heart of the present house is an aisled hall, built from timbers felled in the 12th century. During the 16th and 17th century the house was extended with the addition of cross wings at both ends of the open hall. Fyfield Hall is one of the earliest surviving timber framed buildings and has been painstakingly restored for future generations to enjoy.

Fyfield Hall has benefited from a programme of restoration which has resulted in a splendid balance between the retention of the elegant period features and the addition of 21st century conveniences including state of the art kitchen and bathrooms and a self-contained cottage. Historical features include the red brick 16th century chimney, oak staircase, herringbone tiled floor, several fireplaces and exposed timbers. Rooms in properties of this age can often be considered dark, but Fyfield Hall offers generously proportioned and light filled rooms, the majority enjoying fine views. The kitchen/breakfast room is an important room in any country house and Fyfield House has a bespoke Chalon designed kitchen which overlooks the grounds to the south. Heritage colours have been used to complement the high quality craftsmanship such as the hand built kitchen, panelled snug and bespoke fitted library.

The accommodation extends to around 6,000 sq ft of formal entertaining and family living space including a striking medieval entrance door which opens to the impressive great hall of about 17ft x 15ft with views over the grounds, an inglenook fireplace with brick surround and log burner. The key reception rooms such as the drawing room, sitting room, dining room, library, kitchen/breakfast room and snug are all arranged around the great hall. On the first floor there is a family bathroom and five good sized bedrooms, four en suite, including the master suite which is about 21ft x 17ft. The east wing has a self contained one bedroom cottage, with a living room, bedroom, kitchen and shower room.

Outside, a gravelled entrance driveway passes through the grounds to the front of the house, adjacent to the cottage and detached outbuilding. The grounds have been landscaped with extensive lawns and beautiful views to south towards Fyfield church. On the eastern boundary there is a small lake and a scattering of mature trees and to the west and adjacent to the entrance driveway, there is a leisure field which gently slopes towards the River Roding.

Directions
From the Four Wantz roundabout at Chipping Ongar take the B184 Fyfield Road and continue for 2.5 miles. On entering Fyfield village turn right at the Queen’s Head pub signposted to Willingale. Continue over the river and as you start to rise up the hill, the entrance will be found on the left, opposite the church.
