Castle Street (formerly also known as Cat Street) once served as the main entry to Aylesbury from Thame. The crest of the hill was lowered slightly to make access less steep, hence the pavement being some feet above the road at that point. No trace has been found of the castle from which the road takes its name. The area around the Church and Museum contains some of Aylesbury’s oldest buildings.
Church Street contains a number of late medieval and Tudor buildings refronted in the 18th and 19th Centuries to fit with contemporary style. The road includes several properties owned by Thomas Hickman’s Charity, which was founded in 1698 with the intention of aiding the poorest people in Aylesbury.
The first purpose built school buildings for the Aylesbury Grammar School were constructed on Church Street between 1718 and 1720, serving as a home for the school until their relocation to the present Walton site in 1907.
