Old Buittle Tower dates back some 600 years and was originally the bailey or keep for the nearby Buittle Castle which sits on a protected site of historic interest and links to the Scottish Crown. Formerly occupied by John Balliol and Lady Devorgilla In 1308 and again in 1313 the castle was raided by troops under Robert the Bruce and largely destroyed. The Castle mote and ruins are owned by Balliol College Oxford which is where the College's first Statutes were sealed by Dervorguilla of Galloway in the 13th century. Lady Devorgilla was also responsible for Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey near Dumfries where her late husband's heart was interred. Down the centuries the tower has been extended with additional floors added with a spiral tower staircase accessing the upper levels. Accommodation extends over four levels and the tower sits within some 5 acres of private grounds incorporating a courtyard and various outhouses, formal gardens, agricultural buildings and sheltering woods.
Having been altered and restored to residential use by the previous owners some 25 years ago, the Tower is now in need of further refurbishment and modernisation but offers an extremely rare opportunity to acquire a traditional and historic building that would rarely come on the open market.

Formal lawned and planted gardens lie on three sides of the tower house with off drystane boundary walls and grazing paddocks beyond the formal gardens and steps down to the lower lawn feature and stream on the boundary to the castle field.
